EDTV vs. HDTV: The Fight between TV Quality Supremacy

The continuous rise of our technology sometimes creates confusion among the ordinary people who has only limited knowledge about the field. Confusion as to the terms used is oftentimes the case being brought into, like that of the EDTV being different from HDTV.

High-Definition Television (HDTV) refers to the broadcast of television signals with a higher resolution than the traditional formats allow. It is broadcast digitally thus its introduction sometimes coincides with the introduction of digital television.

Previously, the term was also used to refer to television standards developed in the 1930s to take the place of the early experimental systems. It brought a new trend of television technology to the world which historically used other standards for almost over half a century.

In the context of HDTV, the formats of the broadcasts are being used to describe the number of lines in the display resolution, the progressive frames or interlaced film and the number of frames or fields per second.

In comparison to the previous standards, HDTV has at least twice their resolution therefore allowing much more detail to be shown compared to analog television or the regular DVD.

EDTV, on the other hand, which stands for Enhanced Definition Television, doesn't sound like much compared to HDTV but it is in fact a major step forward in picture quality.

EDTV is the solution that was taken to eliminate the interlacing system that it had replaced. Interlacing was originally invented to save transmission bandwidth in view of the fact that with an interlaced signal one only need top send half the frame at a time. But today we already have media such as the DVD from which we can read and transmit picture information a bit faster than ever before leaving no reason for interlaced format to stay any longer. This is the concept of the manufacturers when they thought about EDTV.

With the introduction of this "a leap forward" technology we need not disregard the fact that HDTV had been a helpful tool, too, and is still being utilized by a number of modernized institutions like the broadcast industry.

The industry is struggling toward the conversion of the present system to High Definition Television, which is most probably will be complete in another half a decade. The system is quite agreeable because it increases the number of scan lines on the screen and widens the aspect ratio of the screen from the standard which is what most of the televisions are today. Whatever it is that makes HDTV favorable, it should always be noted that it does have both very good formats that would provide a better viewing for us. But with this fact, still there are numerous others who are ready to spend a great deal of money just to make the quality of the picture be the best possible among its kind and acceptable to the mass market.

But another fact is that, video transfer quality on DVDs has improved long before HDTV's were introduced. So it is just practically the same as saying that even without HDTV, larger screen projectors will continue to look amazingly good.

Since EDTV is far more advanced than HDTV and there is not a great deal of difference between the prices of the two, people would normally invest on the former. So if you're thinking of buying a new set for your home, you might as well go for the unit that handles the latest system.
